FOX News

What is it ?

Fox News is an American basic cable television channel that is owned by the Fox entertainment Group subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. As of August 2013, approximately 97,186,000 American households receive the Fox News Channel.

What is the issue with Fox News?

Its not exactly “breaking news” to find out that Fox News is mostly comprised of misinformation or flat-out lies.  Anyone with even a shred of common sense can watch just a handful of their featured shows and see that the entire channel is nothing more than a propaganda mechanism for the Republican party

Exam - Question two re-write

Name - HOT SPOT NEWS
This name is catchy and sounds like a slang expression which would attract the youth based audience
The idea of "spot" is due to this news broadcast being shown at the same time every day, therefore allocating this channel a specific spot / slot which would become known by the youth generation
The idea of "hot" demonstrates that the news channel will only include the hottest and interesting news stories which would therefore appeal to the youth generation, making this new channel popular within their age group.

Duration - 6:45 PM - 7:00 PM everyday
This time is mid evening and a suitable broadcast tune as it is when most teenagers are sat down and relaxing watching the television, so by broadcasting the news show at this time would therefore mean that it would attract a wide amount of viewers who are young and youthful.
The time of the show is only 15 minutes, I chose such a short amount of time as I believe it would keep the attention of the youthful viewers and would be short enough for the news stories to be actually watched and listened to, allowing the youth generation to then have an idea about the news.

Studio Design
The studio will be pure white and be made up of modern furnishings such as sofas and coffee tables filled with apple gadgets rather than desks and office chairs made up of note pads, as by having such modern furniture and gadgets it would give away a relaxed appeal which would draw in the attention of the youthful generation as they would therefore view the news as more of an enjoyable programme rather than a typical boring broadcast. I will have the use of bright lighting which would make the presenters skin tones look immaculate and the studio to be easily visible and clear.
In the background of the studio I will have a digital screen showing images that the viewers have sent in via social media, this would create a personal relationship and the idea of fun as it would allow the youth audience to get involved and therefore watch the news to view if their image had been shown, so by doing this is helps to get more youths viewing the news.

Use of  media throughout the broadcast
Live footage
VOX pops
Interviews
All the above will be used to add variety to the news channel so that the broadcast never get repetitive or boring.

Presenters
There will be a male and female presenter, with one being a celebrity and one being a usual presenter, this would attract the youth audience as many would view the news to watch the celebrity present the news, this would also bring in entertainment to the news which would take away the typical boring and serious stereotype news has.
The presenters will also show alot of emotion to reveal that the channel is non bias and un-serious, this would make the youth generation interested in the news channel because they would view it as a television programme rather than the news.
Both presenters will be dressed in formal smart, and dressed in the hottest fashion trends allowing viewers to get fashion ideas, which would help to draw in the attention of many female youths.

News Type

Hard news
- 5 minute war based story or violence based
-2 minute on the headline story involving continuity or seriousness
-3 minute on a government / political based story
-1 minute on story based on closeness to home

Soft news
- 3 minute update on celebrity news, fashion trends and the hottest celebrity instagram uploads and tweets.

( 1 minute on opening and ending sequence and news credits)

What is OFCOM ?
  1. Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK. They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.

Freedom of the press / freedom of the media is the freedom of communication and expression through electronic media and published materials such as magazines or news papers.
With respect to governmental information, information is sensitive, classified or secret and being otherwise protected from publish due to relevance of the information to protecting national interest.

The USA in 1948 states: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers"

I believe freedom of speech is acceptable but to a certain extent, by this I mean people should be allowed to express their opinions and views on world happenings but once their opinion includes either abuse or racism their freedom of speech should be cancelled and no longer valid.

Question one _ updated

Dear youth media

I would be over whelmed to take the opportunity and design your new youth media news channel, as I believe I know all the qualities needed to make it successful and attract the teenage audience.

My research was on two separate news broadcasts, the first being “BBC news at six” and the other being “News round” .To begin with I am going to discuss the representation in which both channels give away. BBC news at 6 is aimed at the middle working class A-C bracket of both sexes, as its studio design is simplistic with the use of plain colours such as black and white and red. Also the studio uses minimal accessories which appeals to the middle working class as there are minor distractions which allows the audience to remain focused on the news presenters allowing them to take in the full news story.  Therefore I realised that because the viewers are focused on the news presenters it gives away the idea of representation and reveals that the BBC is a serious news channel rather than entertainment based. The camera angle also used within the broadcast are full pan zooms of the studio or head shot angles of the presenters sat behind the desk, these angles are very simplistic and allow their to be only one main focus during the broadcast and in BBC case it being the presenters, However if we now analyse News round representation is used completely different due to its colouring scheme being bright and bold and its studio design being modern and complicated which gives away the representation idea that this news channel is aimed at younger children and consists of soft news rather than hard news. Also with news-round a wide variety of camera angles are used during the broadcast to make the news seem more like a fun based television programme rather than a serious which would keep the attention of the young target audience.

Another aspect I analysed was the type of news stories that both broadcast, to begin with BBC news at six focused on hard news such as war, death and crime and only a small amount of the broadcast time was spent on soft news stories focusing on celebrities ect. BBC news includes mainly hard news stories due to their target audience being working class adults and their showing time being early evening, and also due to their audience watching the news to discover world happenings even if they are based around negativity and continuity. However when viewing newsround the news stories broadcast were all mainly soft news and when stories on war/death/crime were broadcast they were simplified and presented by the presenters in a way which would make the young target audience not feel scared or worried towards the negative world events. Also news round does also base a large majority of its stories around personalisation and soft news topics discussing animals and celebrities.

I am now going to discuss a various amount of differences in which I noticed whilst analysing both news channels; to begin with BBC news at 6 broadcast most of its stories in a bias tone through a mixture of vox pops and global interviews, this allows the news to be watched by their target audience and to allow their views to change due to how the presenters present it. Where as news round is un-bias and uses only vox pops so that their young target audience are to led to change their view. I also analysed the presenters as I realised the BBC presenters were of both sexes and dressed in suits and had a serious expression throughout the show, this revealed the seriousness of of the news broadcast aiming it at the older mature working class adults, More over news round uses only one presenter at a time who is sat causally upon a sofa or on Mondays the presenter is disabled which represents diversity to the young audience.

Through analysing the two opposite news channels, i believe i have found a perfect design idea which would interest teenagers specifically and have both a part of adult hood and child hood involved.
